Kyriakos Schwarz

Cheminformatics & AI Scientist

I build machine-learning systems for scientific discovery, translating complex chemical and biological data into useful software.

Hi, I’m Kyriakos and my passion is turning data into value.

I bridge the gap between software engineering and drug discovery, translating complex cheminformatics data into practical, data-driven solutions. My experience involves building high-impact tools to tackle complex cheminformatics challenges, like compound selection and reaction prediction. I am a proactive and detail-oriented team player, dedicated to solving scientific problems through collaboration. As a lifelong learner, I am motivated to continuously expand my skills to advance therapeutic development.

I have obtained my Ph.D. degree in Medical Artificial Intelligence from the University of Zurich, affiliated with the University Hospital Zurich and the ETH AI center. I am currently doing a PostDoc at ETH Zurich and Roche in Basel.

Work Experience

Roche & ETH Zurich

Postdoctoral Researcher - AI for Drug Discovery

February 2025 - Present | Basel, Switzerland

Cheminformatics and machine learning for reaction intelligence and compound design.

I collaborate with medicinal chemistry, CADD, and Computational Sciences teams on cheminformatics and AI for drug discovery. My work includes machine learning for atom mapping and reaction class annotation, analysis of a new reaction database at Roche, an ML-guided compound selection tool with a user-friendly GUI, and a golden set of building blocks for accelerated drug discovery.

Luzerner Kantonalbank AG

Machine Learning Scientist

February 2023 - December 2024 | Luzern, Switzerland

Production machine learning and data interoperability for customer analytics.

I worked across the full Big Data pipeline, from feature engineering in Oracle SQL to deploying and maintaining production AI models through MLOps processes. I also helped transition the team from a traditional Data Warehouse to a multi-cloud Databricks solution on Microsoft Azure.

University of Zurich

Machine Learning Scientist / Medical Researcher

April 2019 - January 2023 | Zurich, Switzerland

Medical AI research in computational pharmacology and data interoperability.

I developed an explainable PyTorch Transformer model to predict medication side effects from diverse data, including chemical structures. I analyzed UK Biobank data to study drug-disease relationships and built a Graph Neural Network with PyTorch and RDKit for drug synergy prediction.

fastforward websolutions

Software Engineer

February 2016 - July 2017 | Bern, Switzerland

Full-stack web development and CMS engineering in an Agile/Scrum environment.

I developed front-end applications with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, configured Magnolia CMS, extended its functionality in Java, and built REST and SOAP services. I used Git, Maven, Tomcat, Jenkins, and Docker while applying CI/CD best practices.
